NParks built a new footbridge with barrier-free-access ramps across the 30m-wide Pang Sua Canal in in response to feedback from users of the Pang Sua Park Connector Network, and residents of the Villa Verde Estate who requested a new route between Woodlands Road and Choa Chu Kang Park.
The development posed challenges in terms of engineering complexity, site constraints and environmental impact. Construction of the column supports within the Pang Sua Canal had to be carried out in such a way that did not affect its capacity, flow of water, or cause damage to the old canal structure. To overcome these challenges, the agencies collaborated to develop innovative techniques that enabled the new bridge to be constructed.
For instance, the use of a contiguous bored pile wall was effective in retaining the bridge’s structure and reducing construction costs. It also contributed to the sustainability of the bridge by providing structural support for future developments. In addition, environmentally friendly construction methods were used, such as recycling debris to be used as hardcore, where applicable, within the worksite.
This lessened the need for disposal of materials and transportation of new materials onsite by lorries, thereby reducing noise and dust pollution for residents of Villa Verde estate. Some of the techniques used could also be applied to other similar projects.
