Kranji Secondary School and the Residents’ Committee (RC) Grassroots Leaders (GRLs) received feedback about the need for a sheltered linkway from the residential blocks to Kranji Secondary School.
The feedback was conveyed to the Adviser and Limbang Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) Chairman when the school started planning for its rebuilding. The sheltered linkway was proposed to ensure that residents, especially students and parents, could reach school even in bad weather. Limbang CCC and its Grassroots Leaders initiated discussion with the Marsiling-Yew Tee Town Council (MYTTC). They formed a team with the Principal of Kranji Secondary School.
The team concluded that it would benefit the residents most if a covered linkway was to be constructed to link Kranji Secondary School to the nearest block along Choa Chu Kang Street 51, which is approximately 90m apart. This sheltered linkway proposal would also benefit students from the nearby bus stop and residents from Blocks 501 to 512 to access the sheltered linkway.
Limbang CCC, Limbang Park RC, MYTTC and PA’s staff worked together with Kranji Secondary School for the development and completion of the sheltered linkway.
Throughout the process, many challenges were faced. For example, the linkway was part of a Park Connector Network and the intended pavement was above a drainage system. Thus, the team had to engage other agencies such as NParks and PUB. Additionally, the work progress was slowed down significantly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After 43 months of planning and construction in December 2021, the linkway was completed and was well-received by residents.
“A resident mentioned that she is appreciative of the construction of the linkway. Her daughter used to run to school in the rain but now with the sheltered connectivity, she does not have to feel uncomfortable attending classes in a wet uniform.” – RC Chairman Mr Tan.
