In July 2021, the National Environment Agency (NEA) launched the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme for e-waste management, making producers of regulated electrical and electronic equipment responsible for ensuring the proper collection and treatment of products that they supply to the Singapore market at their end-of-life. NEA appointed a Producer Responsibility Scheme (PRS) Operator to collect and send consumer e-waste for recycling, on behalf of the producers. Under the EPR scheme, producers are required to finance the PRS and pay for the services provided by the PRS Operator.
NEA collaborates with Town Councils, the People’s Association, and industry partners to ensure proper collection and handling of e-waste from public. E-waste contains heavy metals and toxic substances that can harm the environment and public health if not properly handled. Precious metals can also be recovered from e-waste and turned into new products. This regulated system safeguards the environment, protects our health and eliminates wrongful disposal of bulky items at rubbish chutes or void decks.
Recycling e-waste has become more convenient since the start of the EPR scheme. ALBA E-waste Smart Recycling Pte Ltd, the appointed PRS operator, has deployed over 600 e-waste collection points island-wide, at shopping malls, large electronic retailers, supermarkets, government and commercial buildings and community centres. The public can also recycle their e-waste at scheduled quarterly collection drives organised by the PRS Operator and Town Councils in their housing estates.

To improve convenience and accessibility for the public to recycle their e-waste, the NEA and the PRS Operator organised e-waste collection drives in residential estates. The e-waste collection drives are held once every quarter, on a weekend, and advertised to residents with the support of Town Councils.

The International E-Waste Art Exhibition was organised by the PRS Operator, with support from NEA, to improve awareness of e-waste recycling.
