Illegal parking was among the top municipal issues concerning residents in Mountbatten. Frequent illegal parking was observed in places such as Tanjong Rhu View as the estate is a popular destination for picnics and recreational activities. It has caused disamenities to the residents in the vicinity. The Mountbatten Parking Heroes team devised a solution that would go beyond enforcement by government agencies, and installed a series of strategically placed high profile standees and banners with humorous messages such as “Why You Park Here! Your Grandfather Road Ah?”. The idea was to catch the attention of drivers and influence them to change their parking behaviours.
The standees and banners were so successful that more than 18 other standees were put up in the other places in the constituency which were prone to the same problem such as Tanjong Katong Road and Old Airport Road. Positive feedback has been received from residents that the standees have led to an improvement of the situations and an effective reminder to the drivers. More standees have also been requested by residents.
The team also overcame challenges on deployment during Covid situation by working closing with agencies such as LTA on locations and alignment with LTA’s messaging, NParks and NEA on locations and placement of standees and banners, and MSO for ensuring no infringements to copyrights. The People’s Association staff also supported the team with procurement process, sourcing and liaising with vendor on the installations, and disbursing payment to the vendor.
