Residents shared safety concerns regarding the discretionary right turn at a junction near West Coast Market Square. As the area has high footfall with senior pedestrians, West Coast Constituency Office (CO) and West Coast Grassroots Organisations (GROs) acted fast.
Due to the nature of the issue, multiple agencies were involved. West Coast CO raised the feedback to LTA, and set up a team comprising CO officers, GRO volunteers and LTA officers to find a solution. Representatives from West Coast Green Residents’ Network (RN), West Coast Vista RN, West Coast Active Aging Committee and West Coast CC Senior Citizens’ Executive Committee were roped in.
The team worked together on a solution to install Red-Amber-Green (RAG) arrow signals in the area. With the RAG arrows controlling right turns at the junction, motorists wait for the arrow to turn green before making a right turn, even when there is no opposing traffic or pedestrians crossing the road. This has improved road safety for pedestrians and motorists.
While LTA oversaw the feasibility and operational considerations, West Coast GROs facilitated regular ground-sensing to understand and evaluate the proposed solution.
