Clean Streets SG
10 December 2022
A community-led project in Taman Jurong combined a litter-picking campaign, a preschool storybook, and a solar-powered “talking” rubbish bin to promote cleanliness habits and reduce littering in the neighbourhood.
📌 About the project
Taman Jurong and Jurong Lake Gardens Wards, Jurong GRC (2022).
Led by the Taman Jurong Community Emergency and Engagement (C2E) Committee.
This project was initiated under the MSO’s Love Our 'Hood Youth Challenge 2021’s challenge statement, “Let’s Keep Singapore Clean”, to raise awareness of cleanliness and cultivate good habits of keeping the environment litter-free.
The project team organised a litter-picking campaign, developed a storybook for preschoolers, and created a solar-powered, smart ‘talking’ rubbish bin.
🏘️ The issues
Identified a lack of educational resources for young children on cleanliness habits, as well as limited engagement tools to promote proper waste disposal.
The project team sought to raise awareness about cleanliness and reduce litter in their neighbourhood.
💡 What we did
Organised a litter-picking campaign at Jurong Lake Gardens on 10 December 2022. The team collaborated with the National Parks Board (NParks), green non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and Terra Sol Pte Ltd, a company specialising in robotics, to conduct educational talks before the litter-picking activity.
Collaborated with an illustrator to develop a storybook for preschoolers with educational messages on cleanliness and minimising corridor clutter. The storybook was subsequently distributed to preschools in Taman Jurong.
Worked with Terra Sol Pte Ltd to co-produce a solar-powered ‘talking’ rubbish bin deployed at Jurong Lake Gardens, which played a pre-recorded positive reinforcement message (i.e. “Thank you for playing your part in keeping the area clean.”) when users were detected.

The litter-picking activity held in the Jurong Lake Gardens on 10 December 2022.

🔍 What we learnt
Promoting shared social responsibility across all age groups helped foster a community-wide culture of cleanliness.
Collaborating with diverse partners, such as illustrators, green NGOs, schools, and technology providers, strengthened campaign delivery, broadened audience reach, and enabled more engaging and innovative interventions.
⚙️ Key considerations
Engaging young children through age-appropriate tools, such as illustrated storybooks, can help instil positive values early, with potential for long-term impact.
📈 Impact
Residents and cleaners observed fewer episodes of littering in the residential areas.
137 hard copies of the storybook were produced and distributed to preschools in Taman Jurong in early 2023.
